One Rule for Exercising a Creative Mind

The mighty oak hangs on thru the winter

You know what they say, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That’s pretty much true here in Wisconsin, where we always seem to get a blast of winter this first weekend of the month. Interestingly, it makes for great photography.

March is also the month our Foto Frenzy photography group is studying the rule of thirds. This is one of the first art theories I ever learned and I remember the teacher saying it’s the hardest for beginners to grasp. We always want to put that leaf smack in the middle, right?

Eye-tracking studies show people naturally look to the right or left, upper or lower one-third of a photo. We feel a greater sense of balance and natural comfort when the subject is placed in any of these one-third zones.

Are you looking for a fun, easy, daily exercise for your creative mind? Why not join us at Foto Frenzy on Facebook. We’re a group of amateur (and not completely dedicated) photographers posting pictures every day for a month. Actually we’ve kept at it for almost three months. Who knows, we may go even longer.

Oh, and just so you know. We don’t all post every day and many of us are cell phone shooters!
